Many people have asked me why on earth I would make the decision to spend 3 years of my life (at my age!) back in school. Yet here I am. Studying a subject that is the opposite of what my career was in.
For those of you unfamiliar with what I did in the past, for 20 plus years I worked in finance, the bulk of it as a Financial Planner with RBC. Making the decision to go back to school and study Homeopathy with the Canadian College of Homeopathic Medicine was not one I entered lightly. The art of medicine, anatomy and pathology were not subjects I had ever considered studying.
At the time of this “crazy” school decision, I was already a few years into discovering the world of functional medicine and alternative health on a surface level as I navigated around some health issues that were starting to crop up for me. I was not getting anywhere fast with my allopathic doctors and was becoming increasingly frustrated at the lack of assistance and support I was receiving. I was also watching close friends and family members struggle with the same nonsense. I was sick and tired of hearing the same ‘non-answers’ from the doctors I was raised my entire life to blindly trust.
Thus began my quest to immerse myself in learning everything I could about alternative health. I read every book I could get my hands on, and started an enlightening journey with a myriad of alternative health treatments and modalities. I've written a lot about my initial journey into wellness and many of those alternative health treatments. Each one taught me something and informed my understanding of whole health.
One of the most important things I learnt is that we ultimately control our own destiny when it comes to our health. The sentiment that it is genetics, or simply the aging process does not resonate with me. We may have a genetic “weakness” but something has to turn on the switch. We can begin to advocate for our own health and not accept a doctor’s blanket opinion as finite.
SO WHY HOMEOPATHY?
The more knowledge I gained, the more clarity I found around the important and even critical role of Homeopathy.
It is the 2nd most widely practiced medicine in the world, based on concepts that Hippocrates himself discovered, and it has been being actively practiced (with incredible and well documented success!) for over 240 years.
" In homeopathic medicine, we give value to every single aspect of the human being. We look at everything that a person is suffering from at all those levels, and then we try to find out what is the common link between the different symptoms of the patient. We then look to identify something in nature that is the cure to that one common thing."
Homeopathy looks at the totality of a patient. It evaluates each aspect of our wellness: Physical, Intellectual, Emotional, Spiritual. Essentially, a Homeopath brings together all of the information about a patient that other modalities are looking at in isolation. The more I began to understand this, the more the light bulbs went off and I was driven to study it further.
Fast forward a bit and I am now in the 3rd and final year of my studies. While I can easily state that studying the complex world of homeopathy (…and nutrition…and anatomy…and pathology) has been a steep learning curve, I can also state that it has been the most fascinating and eye-opening experience of my life. I continue to be regularly blown away by the power of Homeopathy and am excited every single day both steeping myself in knowledge, and sharing what I am learning.
THE IMPACT ON SAGE SOLSTICE WELLNESS
My quest in learning as much as I can about alternative health modalities and therapies is to be able to share as many natural healing modalities as I can. The goal is to facilitate self-advocacy by creating an interactive wellness community that provides a wide range of wellness options. Support, shared experience and learning from each other's unique wellness journey is fundamental to self-advocacy.
With that in mind, throughout my Homeopathy education, I'm sharing what I'm learning along the way. The impact it is having on me, my friends and family, and the patients I'm seeing within the CCHM teaching clinic, is profound. Seeing that impact in action only fuels my passion further.
But I also want to hear from you! I would love to create a forum within this community where we can ALL share what is working (and what isn’t) in our individual health and wellness journeys. Not everyone has the same access to specific health practitioners whether due to location or financial means, but how wonderful it would be to have a place to come and read testimonials, tips, and suggestions from others. If you want to share your journey to wellness and what has worked (or not worked) for you, please click here and share your story! I can’t wait to hear from you.
